Madeleine Albright,\u00a0the former Secretary of State, has described herself as an \u201coptimist who worries a lot<\/a>,<\/a>\u201d and thought it a near perfect description of EcoOptimism\u2019s attitude toward ecological\/economic issues.\u00a0 I like it because it acknowledges that, though we here are optimists, \u201cblind optimism\u201d — believing that things will work out somehow — is not realistic or sufficient. It\u2019s not going to just happen, not if we keep on our current course.<\/p>\n

Actually, I\u2019d modify her point because simply worrying won\u2019t help things happen either. Some form of action is necessary, whether it be research, advocating, inventing, producing, legislating\u2026or doing, as in how you live your life. It\u2019s not as pithy and borders on too earnest, but perhaps something like \u201cOptimist who worries a lot and works toward solutions\u201d is better.<\/p>\n
