Here, for your end of the week boost, are a few of them.<\/p>\n<p>From The Economist, a realization that growth unfettered is not necessarily good:<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/econ.st\/QoZsxD\">\u201cA new form of radical centrist politics is needed to tackle inequality without hurting economic growth\u201d<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Some quotes (taken out of order):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In America the share of national income going to the top 0.01% (some 16,000 families) has risen from just over 1% in 1980 to almost 5% now\u2014an even bigger slice than the top 0.01% got in the Gilded Age. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>[I]nequality has reached a stage where it can be inefficient and bad for growth.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Even the sort of inequality produced by meritocracy can hurt growth. If income gaps get wide enough, they can lead to less equality of opportunity, especially in education. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the positive take-away:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The priority should be a Rooseveltian attack on monopolies and vested interests, be they state-owned enterprises in China or big banks on Wall Street.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/bp349-assessing-the-green-economy\/\">new study<\/a> from the Economic Policy Institute, \u201cIndustries that support a higher number of \u201cgreen\u201d workers who are making goods and services more environmentally friendly have experienced a higher rate of growth over the last decade than industries with fewer green jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 result: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/03\/23\/450776\/bureau-of-labor-statistics-reports-31-million-us-green-jobs-top-5-takeaways\/\">3.1 million green jobs<\/a> nationwide in renewable energy, water management, recycling, and various positions that help improve the efficiency and environmental footprint of a company or institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From achieved on the sidelines of the Rio+20 conference, as highlighted by Jo Mackness at GreenBiz on June 26, was progress made on natural capital accounting. Fifty-seven countries and 86 companies, for instance, signed a World Bank-organized communiqu\u00e9 committing signatories to account for the value of clean air, clean water and forests in their Daniel ]Tarullo said that, in order to keep big banks from growing so large that they threaten the entire financial system, they should be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/speech\/tarullo20121010a.htm\">limited in size to a certain percentage<\/a> of the overall economy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c[T]he Fed should <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10000872396390443749204578048910493023662.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTWhatsNewsCollection\">block any merger or acquisition<\/a> this group of big banks attempts to make,\u201d which it is allowed to do under Dodd-Frank.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The string of positivism actually began a bit earlier in the week with a post from The Atlantic\u2019s new site summer<strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/speech\/bernanke20120806a.htm\">Bernanke said<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">,<\/span>\u00a0\u201d\u2026we should seek better and more-direct measurements of economic well-being, the ultimate objective of our policy decisions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rather, Bernanke suggests that survey measures of happiness and life satisfaction should take their place alongside GDP as measures of how a nation is doing. In doing so, he joined current British Prime Minister\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/politics\/2010\/nov\/14\/david-cameron-wellbeing-inquiry\">David Cameron, who said<\/a>\u00a0\u201dit\u2019s time we focused not just on GDP but on GWB\u2014general wellbeing\u201d and former French Prime Minister\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/france\/6189530\/Nicolas-Sarkozy-wants-to-measure-economic-success-in-happiness.html\">Nicolas Sarkozy, who said<\/a>\u00a0he would\u00a0\u201dfight to make all international organisations change their statistical systems by following the recommendations\u201d\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stat.si\/doc\/drzstat\/Stiglitz%20report.pdf\">the Stiglitz report<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span>\u00a0He refers to Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz\u2019s committee\u2019s work proclaiming \u201cthe time is ripe for our measurement system <strong>to\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>shift emphasis from measuring economic production to measuring people\u2019s well-being.<\/strong><\/em><em>\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<em>The\u00a0emphasis is in the original.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s good to end the week on an up note.
